Calculating the Cost Per Mile of Trucking
In 2019, data provided on DAT Analytics indicated that the average cost of flatbed shipping was $2.14 per mile. This varies from state to state and is dependent on the freight being shipped, with reefer trucks running at a higher rate per mile than the standard flatbed. To calculate your approximate cost per mile, you need to know how many miles you'll drive in a month (including deadhead miles). You will also need to know your fixed expenses per month, including truck payments, insurance costs and permits. Also calculate your variable costs per month, like fuel, meals, repairs, broker fees and lodging. Finally, put it all together:
- • Calculate fixed cost per mile (divide fixed costs by number of miles driven in the month)
- • Calculate variable costs per mile (divide variable costs by number of miles driven in the month
- • Add the two values together and you'll have your estimated cost per mile.
